La Pavoni boiler cap, boiler or base leaking

Most likely cause

A hissing cap usually needs a new cap gasket. Water from the base after a shot is more serious: Kanen Coffee says the gasket has failed and must be replaced before further use. Never open the cap while the machine is on or under pressure.

Safety first

La Pavoni’s manual is direct: do not open the boiler cap while the machine is in operation or still under pressure, to avoid burns. To refill, switch off, open the steam knob slowly and wait for all the steam to escape before unscrewing the cap.

Leaking or hissing at the cap

The cap seals on a gasket. When it hardens or cracks, steam escapes around the cap. A replacement cap gasket is in full gasket kits; Orphan Espresso lists it among the extra parts in its full kits. Do not overtighten the cap to stop a leak.

Water from the base after a shot

Kanen Coffee says that if water leaks from the base after a shot, the gasket has failed and replacement is mandatory before further use. La Pavoni’s current parts list includes an 80mm boiler gasket for the lever family. Because this involves separating the boiler from the base and the heating element sits there, it is a job many owners hand to a technician.
